Mineral sunscreens use inorganic (physical) filters such as zinc oxide that sit on the skin’s surface, reflecting and scattering most UV rays before they can penetrate.

Chemical sunscreens use organic (synthetic) filters like avobenzone that absorb UV radiation and transform it into a small amount of heat, which is then released from the skin.
